Capturing Rizal

# 10

ANNA ROA

Jose Rizal saw the many injustices that his fellow Filipinos suffered in the hands of the Spaniards. While Rizal demonstrated his love for the country early on as a student, this same love grew even stronger. In his essay "Love of Country" (1882), Rizal describes this love as "the most powerful force behind the most sublime actions" and "of all loves ... it is the greatest, the most heroic, and most disinterested." With this love, Jose Rizal embraced the Filipino people with all his heart through his work and even died for them.  Art piece by BenCab (1994), "Reunion"
